Strength training for runners is resistance work built around the specific demands of running, rather than general gym conditioning. Running looks like a pure endurance activity, but every stride is a small, repeated act of force production: the leg absorbs impact, stores elastic energy in the tendons, then releases that energy to propel the body forward. At the same time, the gains in running economy mean a stronger runner often becomes a faster one at the same level of aerobic fitness, not through more running, but through a body that wastes less energy with each stride.

Strength training isn't reserved for elite athletes chasing marginal gains. It applies to anyone whose body has to absorb the repeated impact of running.
For competitive runners, it's a genuine performance lever: improved economy and power output that running alone won't build. For recreational runners, it's often the difference between a hobby that lasts for years and one interrupted by a recurring injury.
